What Is a Fatbike and Why Is It So Popular?
A fatbike stands out right away because of its tires: much wider than a regular bike's, and running at much lower pressure. Together, those two things change what the bike can do, and explain why fatbikes have taken off in recent years on both beaches and snow.
What makes a fatbike different
Fatbike tires usually measure between 3.8 and 5 inches wide, compared to around 2 inches on a solid mountain bike. Combined with low tire pressure (often under 1 bar), that wide surface gives much more grip and float on loose, soft, or slippery terrain. A regular bike sinks fast into sand or snow; a fatbike stays much closer to the surface instead of digging in.
Why fatbikes took off
A few things came together. First, the rise of electric bikes made fatbikes more practical: with pedal assist, the extra weight of the wide tires and sturdier frame barely matters. Second, their wide, stable base makes fatbikes relatively easy to ride for people who don't cycle every day, which makes them a good fit for tourist rentals. Third, ski resorts and coastal towns found an activity that still pays off outside peak season: fatbike tours on snow or sand fill exactly the periods when the slopes are empty or it's too cold to swim.
Buying or renting: what to check
- Weight: with wider rims, tires, and often a sturdier frame, a fatbike is noticeably heavier than a regular bike. With electric pedal assist this barely matters in practice; without it, it's a real factor on long rides.
- Electric or not: most brands in our buying guide offer both electric and non-electric models. On desert, snow, or dune terrain, pedal assist is the difference between enjoying the ride and struggling through it.
- Tire size: the wider the tire, the better the float on very loose terrain (deep snow, soft sand), but also the heavier and slower the bike feels on paved roads.
